Captain John Noel's cine camera used on 1922 Everest expedition
“NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera”, 35mm ciné camera, serial number 109. Sold under the Newman Sinclair brand name. Made by Arthur Newman in Highgate, London, c. 1922. Designed by Arthur Newman with input from Captain John Noel. Used by Captain John Noel on the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition. Camera taken to an altitude of 22,000 ft to shoot footage for film Climbing Mount Everest. Fitting on top right for three-point motor. Focusing eye piece on left. Dials on rear of camera to control aperture, show film usage. Knob at lower bottom to mark film. Three external doors, operated with a ball and clasp. Two film magazines located at rear. Internal mechanism entirely visible to assist with cleaning and fixing in harsh conditions.
In 1922, as the British Everest expedition set out, audiences were fascinated with remote places. John Noel took eagerly anticipated film and photographs of the expedition. They proved so popular that, on a second expedition in 1924, film clips were that were regularly taken to Darjeeling by a relay of pony riders for processing were sent on to the Pathé news agency, to keep audiences updated.
