Microscope slide used in research relating to trench fever as transmitted by lice, made by F. Martin Duncan, 1918-19
One of thirteen microscope slides in wooden box, relating to human lice in trench fever work, by F. Martin Duncan, 1918-19. Slide G: 'Sperm 1/7/18 20_1'.
The slide contains samples of the sperm of a louse that had fed on patients with Trench Fever, to investigate whether the microorganism B. quintana, responsible for causing the illness, could be passed on through reproduction. Findings like these were crucial in understanding and trying to prevent trench fever through improved sanitation and hygiene.
