60 Digital images of railways in Northern England during the first national lockdown in response to COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2)

The collection comprises of 60 colour, black-and-white, greyscale, and isolated colour digital images of railways and rail stations during the first national lockdown in response to COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2). Images were taken between 1 April and 31 May 2020 in railway stations in or approaching Sheffield, Leeds, Doncaster, Lincoln, Huddersfield, Wakefield Kirkgate, and Barnsley railway stations, and Sheffield Cathedral Square Supertram stop. All images were shot and colour-corrected by Craig Scott, a Guard for Northern Trains Limited.

Images depict stations, platforms, and interiors of passenger rail services, and capture the atmosphere of railway and tram travel during the early days of lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic, including provisions for essential travel and social distancing, closure of non-essential businesses, increased hygiene by washing hands, and social support for the National Health Service (NHS).

A significant proportion of railway employees were designated as ‘key workers’ during the Covid 19 pandemic. During lockdowns, travel and work restrictions, many railway workers were exempted from rules that applied to the general public and continued to work on the railway.
