Pessary, ivory, French, c. 1830
Vaginal pessaries supported a prolapsed uterus or other abnormal uterine positions. A prolapsed uterus is where the uterus has shifted down from its usual position in the abdominal cavity. The use of pessaries became widespread in the 1800s. This example is made of ivory.
