The metal stem was known as an introducer. It was inserted into the birth canal. When it was withdrawn, the attached tape was left looped around the foetus. The physician or obstetrician gently pulled on the tape to assist delivery. This example was designed by J. Lazarewitch. It was made by instrument makers Down Brothers.
