Forceps, obstetrical, Hamon, steel, nick-plated, by Dubois of Paris, 1850-1930
This type of forceps is known as ‘retroceps’. They are made from nickel-plated steel and are designed to act like a hand behind the baby’s head. Obstetrical forceps gripped a baby’s head during difficult childbirths. Retroceps were invented by a man called Hamon around 1864. They were one of many designs to appear in the 1800s.
