Ferranti Creditphone launched a second generation network of CT2 mobile telephones on the 1st November 1989. Unlike the earlier 1st generation mobile telephones that required a base station plugged into a conventional telephone line to send its signals too, 2nd generation mobile telephones communicated via public base stations known as telepoints.

Ferranti had created 300 telepoints in London and along motorways to provide customers with a service.
