Sale Borough Council

The township of Sale adopted the 1858 Local Government Act in 1866 to set up Sale Local Board. The Local Board governed the town until the 1894 Local Government Act reconstituted the Board as Sale Urban District Council. The neighbouring district of Ashton-upon-Mersey became part of Sale Urban District in 1930.

By 1933, Sale Urban District had the largest population in the county of Cheshire. The council submitted a petition to the Privy Council to change its status to Municipal Borough by Charter of Incorporation. The petition was successful and Sale became a Municipal Borough in 1935. The 1972 Local Government Act abolished Municipal Boroughs, and Sale became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford.
