Air Ministry

The Air Ministry was created to oversee the formation of the Royal Air Force an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. As well as overseeing and managing the affairs of the Royal Air Force it also issued specifications for aircraft to aircraft companies. The prototype aircraft would be tested by the Ministry who would then assigned it with a name.

Research and Development for the British Space Programme
Collection consisting of a series of photographic prints and information sheets about early aircraft and Rolls-Royce engines for early aircraft produced by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Fairey Aviation Company, Bleriot, and Vickers Ltd. The photographs feature aircraft built for military service in World War One and World War Two, as well as the inter-war period. Some of the photographs are later copies of earlier images. The collection also includes a photograph album of the Blackpool Works of Vickers-Armstrong under construction and information sheets about the history of Bristol Aircraft and Rolls-Royce.

Technical material relating to AVRO aircraft
A collection of notes and handbooks relating to wireless and telegraphy training carried out at HMS Victory VI training establishment based at Crystal Palace, London. The collection also includes notes relating to an apprenticeship in Aero Engineering undertaken by Mr Beattie in 1921, and a copy of the Pilot's Notes for the Anson I aircraft, with a dried maple leaf enclosed, 1948.

Research and Development for a Full Pressure Suit
The flight logs document the types of aircraft the pilots flew during their miltary and civilian careers as test pilots. They include details of the flights of various new types of aircraft being developed at AVRO, including Vulcan and prototypes. Amongst the other papers are various publications produced by the Air Ministry and War Office. Photographic prints in the collection show various types of miltary aircraft, including the prototypes being tested. There are a number of photographs taken during the course of the careers of the individual pilots at various locations both during and after the Second World War.
