Sir Nigel Gresley is considered one of Britain’s most famous locomotive designers with his designs of the Flying Scotsman and the Mallard, which achieved speeds of 126 mph. He was appointed the first CME of London and North Eastern Railway in 1923 and became knighted in 1936. In 1941 he died in office and was succeeded by Edward Thompson.
