Bailey, Richard William (F.R.S., D.Sc. (Eng)., M.I.Mech.E., WH.Ex., Wh.Sch.) 1885 - 1957
Served his apprenticeship at the Stratford Works of the London and North Eastern Railway Company. He gained a Whitworth Exhibition and Whitworth Scholarship, as well as being made the first Director’s Scholar. In 1907 he became a college apprentice at Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co at the Westinghouse Works.
In 1908 he became a college lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Battersea Polytechnic and then Principle of Crewe Technical institute. He went on to become Head of Mechanical Engineering at Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co Ltd, Metallurgical and Chemical Sections before becoming Consulting Research Engineer in the Research Department from 1945 onwards.
As well as his work activities he was also a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers starting as an associate member in 1922 before eventually being appointed Vice-President for the year 1954.
