Laurence Leigh Ardern was librarian at Manchester College of Science and Technology and wrote books on John Benjamin Dancer and John Dalton. He had a particular interest in microforms and compiled a collection of source material relating to John Benjamin Dancer in the course of his research.

Ardern had previously held the position of Deputy Librarian at the University of Strathclyde.
