Paul Berry trained as a stop motion animator. He joined Cosgrove Hall animation studios in Manchester around 1983, animating Mr. Toad, amongst other characters, in 'The Wind in the Willows.' Other films he worked on there were ' The Fool of the World', 'The Flying Ship', 'Truckers' and 'Noddy.' In 1992, he made the award-winning film 'The Sandman' with Ian Mackinnon and Colin Batty. The film's Oscar nomination helped to bring Berry's work to international notice. Paul was brought to America to work on 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' (animator), 'James and the Giant Peach' (animation supervisor), 'Monkeybone' (supervising animator) and the music video for Primus' cover of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".
