A noted English mechanical engineer credited with numerous innovations, particularly related to naval architecture, including weapons. He was also the brother of philosopher Jeremy Bentham

1780 - travelled to the Continent in order to expand his maritime knowledge.

1796 - appointed to the newly created post of Inspector-General, responsible for all matters relating to the improvement of shipbuilding and repair in royal shipyards.
