Werry, William Charles

(fl 1899-1940), mechanical engineer

William Charles Werry was born in c. 1862, Cornwall. He emigrated to Australia in 1870 with his mother Mary and his brother John. His father was already in Australia, mining in Steiglitz, but died shortly after their arrival. Werry went on to be an engine driver in Bendigo, Victoria.

Werry was the inventor of the balance non-vibrating engine, known as the Werry engine. It is claimed that the engine is particularly adapted for marine and locomotive works as it is absolutely balanced and non vibrative. No packing is said to be required, and the friction in the working of the piston is minimised. No massive bed is wanted for foundation, and every ounce of thrsut is stated to be in its crank-shaft. Less room is needed, and its saving in maintenance is claimed to be 22 1/2 per cent on that of any ordinary steam engine. It is said that the engine develops 25 per cent more speed than is usually obtained, and that the "see-sawing" that appertains to locomotive engines is absent.
