Herbert William Hughes wrote 'A Text-Book on Coal Mining for the use of Colliery Managers and Others', 1892. Hughes was elected a member of the Royal Photographic Society in 1893, and became a fellow two years later. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society and the general manager of Sandwell Park Colliery.
