1864 - company established and registered; acquired the business of Smith and Rodger, shipbuilders and engineers;

1910 - acquired grounds previously occupied by William Beardmore and Co considerably extending the Govan yard; boiler shop was at Lancefield on the opposite side of the river and engine works were at Anderston Quay;

1912 - shipyard at Govan taken over by Harland and Wolff

Specialities included warships and merchant steamers, constructed and supplied with their machinery
