After attending State schooling Barry, as he liked to be known, attended Technical College. He joined Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co Ltd and served his time as a College Apprentice between 1938 and 1943 initially as a Draughtsman before going on to work in the Radio Drawing Office, Engineering and then the Radio Sales Department.

He eventually became Technical Editorial Assistant in the Publicity Department at Metropolitan-Vickers in 1949. After short spells working at other electrical companies in Manchester he moved to London were he took up an Editorial position working for the Electricity Council until retirement in the 1970s.
