(1890-1969), River Inspector for the Chinese Maritime Customs

George Raleigh Gray Worcester, born 9th August 1890 in Surrey, served as a River Inspector for the Chinese Maritime Customs from 1914 to 1948. spent 30 years wandering up and down the coast and rivers of China, surveying, marking, and opening the Yangtze to steam navigation. During the 1930s he carried out field research, culminating in a three-year internment in a Japanese prison camp during World War II.

Worcester is the author of seven published books on the Yangzi River and organized the construction of Sir Frederick Maze's celebrated junk models which were presented to the Science Museum. Worcester died in 1969.
