G Scammell and Nephew Ltd.
G Scammell and Nephew Ltd. was formed in 1837 when George Scammell, of Spitalfields, London, took over a wheelwright business. George’s nephew was Alfred Thomas Scammell. G Scammell and Nephew Ltd. were motor vehicle repairers and wagon, van and cart builders. In 1920, George’s great nephew Lt. Col. Alfred George Scammell left the army due to injury and was made Managing Director of the company. He applied the practical experience he gained during the war and developed the ‘Articulated Six-wheeler’, a six-wheel petrol lorry capable of 10 tons, which went into production in 1920. The Scammell Six-wheeler proved popular and the company’s works in Spitalfields were unable to keep up with demand, so production moved to Watford.
On 1 July 1922 Scammell Lorries Ltd. was formed as a public company, acquiring G Scammell and Nephew’s works at Watford. Scammell Lorries Ltd. continued manufacturing lorries for road haulage, including the Scammell Six-wheeler. Scammell Lorries Ltd. was incorporated in 1925 to acquire the original business. In 1926 it was incorporated in a new company, Steel Barrel Scammells and Associated Engineers. In 1961 Scammell was listed as a subsidiary of Steel Barrel Scammells and Associated Engineers Ltd.
