The business traces its origins back to 1865, following the split with the Berlin firm of Siemens and Haslske. It became a limited company in 1880. It was a manufacturer of electrical and telegraph cables, electrical generators, and batteries. It sold its dynamo works at Stafford to English Electric in 1924
