Established in 1936 following the abolition of the office of the Minister of Mines and the Minister of Immigration and Colonization, the Minister of the Interior, and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs. The Mines portfolio was moved to the Minister of Mines and Technical Surveys in 1950.
