The company was established in 1873 on the site of a former whisky distillery. After various mergers and buyouts the mill was eventually bought by Curtis Fine Papers. Paper production began to decline and eventually Curtis Fine Papers went into administration in 2008. The vacant mill was bought by the University of Glasgow.
