Institution of Structural Engineers
The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is a professional body for structural engineers. Established as the Concrete Institute by Edwin Sachs its initial membership was made up of architects, engineers, chemists, manufacturers and surveyors. it was incorporated in 1909 and by 1912 its scope had been widened to all areas of structural engineering, including the use of steel frames. To reflect this the institution's name was changed in 1922 to the Institution of Structural Engineers and in 1924 its journal's name was changed to 'The Structural Engineer'.
In 1926 Florence May Taylor would become the first woman to be elected as a member of the institution and in 1934 it would be grated a Royal Charter. By 1947 it had elected its female chartered member, May Irvine, and in 1954 Marjem Chatterton would become its first fellow. 1964 would see the institution become a registered charity.
In 2007 Dr Sarah Buck would become the president of the Institution of Structural Engineers, the first woman to hold this position.
