Westinghouse Electric Corporation
Westinghouse Electric Corporation was an American manufacturing company found by George Westinghouse in 1886. Westinghouse Electrical Corporation the second name of Westinghouse Electrical & Manufacturing Company, renamed in 1945. It was founded in Pennsylvania, but served internationally. It was a rival to Edison's electricity company, and supplied electricity around the U.S. and abroad. Westinghouse not only pioneered the power generation industry, they also had a formal research department and began developing and commersialisation of nuclear power.
It was headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.
In 1995 Westinghouse aquired CBS and was renamed as CBS Corporation, and shifted its focus to broadcasting. The nuclear power branch of Westinghouse became defunct around this time because of this shift in business practice. However, in 1999 Westinghouse Electric Corporation was aquired by Viacom and its nuclear power division was split off to become the Westinghouse Electric Company. It was formed and bought by BNFL in 1999, was later bought by Toshiba in 2006, and is now owned by Brookfield Business Partners who bought this division in 2018.
