International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an intergovernmental organisation which aims to promote the peaceful use of nuclear weapons. It was established in 1957 within the United Nations (UN). They serve as an intergovernmental forum. It was set up after President Eisenhower's 1953 speech "Atoms for Peace".

The IAEA was created in response to growing international concern toward nuclear weapons, especially during rising tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Their mission is to “seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world. [The Agency] shall ensure, so far as it is able, that assistance provided by it or at its request or under its supervision or control is not used in such a way as to further any military purpose.”

Its headquarters are currently in Vienna, Austria at the UN office, but also has offices in Toronto, Canada, Tokyo, Japan, New York CIty, U.S.A, and Geneva, Switzerland.
