The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is headquartered in Mumbai, India and was established in 1954. It is a government department and has been engaged in the development of nuclear power technology and applications of radiation technologies.

It was established by Presidential Order, and comprises of five research centres, three industrial organisations, five public sector undertakings, and three service organisations. It also supports eight institutes of international repute engaged in research in basic sciences, astronomy, strophysics, cancer research, and education.
