Trades Union Congress

The Trades Union Congress is a national trade union centre in England and Wales. It was established in 1868 in Manchester, UK, at the Mechanics' Institute. It is a federation of trade unions, representing the majority of trade unions. There are 48 affiliated unions, with approximately 5.5 million members.

In achieving its aims the TUC has played a role both in many Government organisations and in the political wing of the Labour movement, although they are not affiliated with the Labour Party. They have run many successful campaigns for workers rights, such as the 1970 Equal Pay Act, the 1999 National Minimum Wage, and the 2007 no-smoking ban. They also took a key role in coordinating the 1926 general strike.

The TUC is governed by an annual Congress at which representatives of affiliated trade unions meet to determine policy and to elect the executive body of the organisation.

It is currently headquartered at Congress House, London, where they have been since 1958.
