Stewarts and Lloyds
Stewarts and Lloyds was a steel tube manufacturer that was formed in 1903 by the merger of A.&J. Stewart & Menzies and Lloyd & Lloyd. Through out its history the company would expand its operations through acquisitions of other institutions and in 1908 it acquired a coal mine through its purchase of Robert Addie & Sons (Collieries) Ltd. During the 1930s it entered into a cooperation agreement with Tube Investments.
In 1934 it began operations at Corby Steel works, which would become fully operational by October 1935. This site would continue to expand by would be closed in 1979.
During the Second World War the company would move to working on projects for the war effort including PLUTO (Pipeline Under the Ocean) and beach obstacles known as Admiralty Scaffolding.
The company was nationalised in 1967 and became part of the British Steel Corporation.
