Corporation Galleries of Art
The Corporation Galleries of Art where an exhibition space in Glasgow owned by the city's corporation. They were initially established privately by Archibald McLellan but following his death they were acquired by the local government. This led them to be known as the Corporation Galleries of Art or alternatively the Corporation Halls. Between 1869 and 1899 the galleries also housed the Glasgow School of Art before this moved to a new building on Renfrew Street. In 1913 a reconstruction project at the gallery was completed and the reopening was marked by the 52nd Exhibition of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. It was also at this point that the name of the Galleries was changed back to the McLellan Galleries, under which name it operated to this day, although it would continue to be known as the Corporation Art Galleries after this.
