Bloomfield, John Caldwell 1823 - 1897

John Caldwell Bloomfield was an Irish landlord and entrepreneur. After serving as an army officer, Bloomfield inherited the estates of Castlecaldwell, County Fermanagh, in 1849. He had much influence in the local area and spent much money to bolster local industry and increase employment; he notably helped to establish the local lace industry, creating employment opportunities for women. The discovery of kaolin and felspar, the two main raw materials for manufacturing porcelain, on his estates led to him founding a pottery in 1858. He was a prominent backer of the Bundoran and Enniskillen railway, as well as the first person to create a steamship service across Lough Erne. He unsuccessfully ran as a Conservative candidate, and was a prominent figure in the synods of the Church of Ireland.
