Friend Jessop (1832 - 1882) was a weaver, schoolmaster and author of 'A Technical Arithmetic of the Woollen Manufactures'. The son of cordwainer, Benjamin Jessop, he was born 5th February 1832 at Kirkheaton, Yorkshire where he lived until his death on 20th July 1882, aged 50. At the age of 19, Jessop was working as a handloom 'fancy weaver' and continued in that trade for the following years, by 1871 had become a schoolmaster (his wife, Elizabeth, a schoolmistress) then by 1881 had returned to the trade of weaving. In 1871 he published 'A Technical Arithmetic of the Woollen Manufactures', a guide to the calculations required for working as a weaver.
