Magnus, Philip 1842 - 1933

Sir Philip Magnus, 1st Baronet, was a British educational reformer and politician. He studied at University College School and University College London, before becoming an assistant rabbi at the West London Synagogue in 1866. He was the director of the City and Guilds of London Institute (CGLI) from 1880. He then became Superintendent at CGLI from 1888 until retirement in 1915. During his time there he focussed his efforts on the development of technical education departments. Aside from his post at the Institute, he was influential in shaping national education policies, and sat on the Royal Commission on Technical Instruction (RCTI). His work with the RCTI led to him being knighted in 1886. In 1906 he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal Unionist.
