Shand, Alexander 1828 - 1904

Alexander Burns Shand, 1st Baron Shand, PC, was a Scottish advocate and judge. He studied law at the University of Edinburgh and was called to the Scottish Bar in 1853. He was made an Advocate Depute in the High Court of Justiciary in 1860. He was made Sheriff of Kincardine in 1862, and was Sheriff of Haddington and Berwick between 1869 and 1872. In 1872 he was made a Lord of Session, given the judicial title of Lord Shand; he held this post until 1890 when he was sworn into the Privy Council. In 1892 he was made a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and became Baron Shand, of Woodhouse in the County of Dumfries. He was married to Emily Merelina, daughter of John Clark Meymott, but had no children. Upon his death in 1904 the barony became extinct.
