The State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was based in Orono, Maine. It was founded under the provisions of the Morrill Act, approved by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. The institution opened Sept. 21, 1868 with 12 students admitted that autumn. In 1897, it changed its name to the University of Maine.
