Grossherzoglichen Kunstgewerbe-Schule
The Grand Ducal Arts and Crafts School) in Karlsruhe was founded in 1878 under the directorship of the architect Gustav Kachel. This built upon the arts and crafts courses that had been offered since 1870, which Kachel had also run. Kachel appointed the decorative painter Hermann Götz , the architect Karl Hammer and the sculptor Adolf Heerto the school and expanded the teaching program, which focused on architectural forms and drawing, decorative painting and modeling, to include a further training course and a department for drawing teachers. Under Götz, who headed the arts and crafts school from 1882-1901, the institution further expanded its international reputation by participating in the world exhibitions in Chicago in 1893, St. Louis in 1904 and Brussels in 1910. The Baden School of Applied Arts merged with the Baden Academy of Fine Arts t form the Baden State Art School on 1 October 1920.
