Société des mines et fonderies de zinc de la Vieille-Montagne
The Society of Zinc Mines and Foundries of the Vieille-Montagne was a zinc-producing company in Liège where it was founded in 1837. In 1846, Louis-Alexandre Calley Saint-Paul de Sinçay took charge of operations in Belgium and set about growing the company. In 1846, the company joined forces with another company to set up a zinc foundry in Hollogne-aux-Pierres which by 1912 had become the largest zinc factory in the world (the site was abandoned in 1982). The Society operated mines throughout Europe. The company merged with others on 28 December 1989 to form ACEC-Union Minière and since 2001 has been called Umicore.
