The Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Crafts was founded in Milan on 7 August 1838 as a fund to promote the "ongoing progress of the arts and crafts in Milan". It was formally named in 1841, as a training body to encourage technical improvements in manufacturing. Its work has continued since then and now includes a valuable library and scientific collection.
