Turin is the capital city of Piedmont in northern Italy, known for its fine architecture and cuisine. The Alps rise to the northwest of the city. Turin was the first capital of united Italy from 1861 to 1865, after which the capital became Florence and, from 1871, Rome. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century saw Turin develop as an industrial city.
