Manchester Art Gallery

Manchester Art Gallery opened as the Royal Manchester Institute in 1833 to exhibit works of art and hold public lectures. Founded 10 years previously, the Royal Manchester Institute acquired its first object in 1827.

The building and its collections were given to the City of Manchester in 1882, prompting the change of name to Manchester Art Gallery.
