E Leitz

Founded in 1849 as the Wetzlar Optical Institute by Carl Kellner. Ernest Leitz joined the company as a mechanic in 1864, manufacturing lenses for telescopes and microscopes. He became a partner in 1865, and took over sole management of the company in 1869.
