Hulton Colliery Co Ltd

1858-c1947, coal mining company, Hulton, Manchester, England.

The company had its origins in small coal mines on the northern part of the Hulton Park estate, which were owned by the Hultons who had held the estate from medieval times.

On on 21 December 1910 an underground explosion occurred at the Hulton Bank Colliery No. 3 Pit, known as the Pretoria Pit, in Over Hulton, Westhoughton. A total of 344 men lost their lives.

The company was transferred to the ownership of the National Coal Board as part of nationalisation in 1947.
