Fred Howarth served as a Design Draughtsman Apprentice, working at Crossley Brothers Limited c1955-1965, after which he went to work at Mirrlees for 12 months.

Howarth's son, also named Fred Howarth, followed in his father's footsteps and joined Crossley as an apprentice.
