From the Atlantic coast of the Democratic Republic of Congo there are roughly 350,000 Yombe. Also known as Ma-Yombe, Kiombi or Bayombe. Of the Kikongo speaking people (Kiyombe dialect) historically influenced by the former kingdom of Kongo. The area was first visited by the Portuguese in the mid 15th century who introduced Christianity, and established extensive links with slave trading and other mercantile interests.
