Invented the "Stellwagen cup", which was used for bringing up sediment from the sea bottom and the "syphon tide gauge" for measuring the level of the sea. Was awarded the Scott Premium Medal from the Franklin Institute for invention of the "Stellwagen cup." Discovered an underwater feature east of Boston between Cape Cod and Cape Ann and named the Stellwagen Bank in 1854.
