Founded by Johann Christoph Voigtländer in Vienna in 1756. In 1965 in merged with Zeiss to form Zeiss/ Voigtlander. The company was founded as manufacturers of scientific equipment, in Austria, in the late 18th century. In about 1850 they moved to Germany, where they became involved in the development of photographic lenses. Their first development was the Petzval lens - named after the scientist who created it. Although the name still adorns a small number of cameras, the company itself has ceased to exist.
