Earned a small fortune through grocery and later printing business. These financed three photographic expeditions to near East, which were to make his reputation. Between 1856 and 1859 he travelled in Palestine, Syria and the Nile, where he took pioneering photographs. Established Francis Frith & Co. 1859/1860.
