Educated at Leeds Grammar School and Leeds University; trained with London & North Western Railway; became Permanent Way Engineer of the South Eastern Railway; Chief Engineer of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway; became General Manager and initially joint General Manager of the Southern Railway; retired January 1924; also Engineer to Channel Tunnel Co. from 1916; given KBE June 1923.
