Reid was a Scottish portrait and landscape artist. He was apprenticed in 1854 for seven years to Messrs Keith & Gibb, lithographers in Aberdeen before moving to Edinburgh in 1862 to study at the Trustees' Academy. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1877, becoming its President between 1891-1902. He was knighted in 1902.
