In addition to his political interests, Lord Blythswood was a keen amateur scientist who established a well equipped laboratory at his home. In close friendship with Lord Kelvin he constructed a large Wimshurst machine, had a dividing engine constructed for ruling diffraction gratings and experimented with X-rays.
